Ontañon ecológico

“Raquel, Rubén and María Pérez Cuevas are a part of the third generation of the Pérez Cuevas family to carry on a tradition of winemaking in the southern part of Rioja (Rioja Baja). Their father, Gabriel, inherited parcels of his father´s vineyards just outside the township of Quel on the higher slopes of the Sierra de Yerga mountain range. When Gabriel took over in the early 1970s, he began making wine from these vineyards rather than selling the fruit, as had been done in decades past. He was determined to produce wine that not only reflected the purest expresion of his family´s beloved vineyard land but also embodied the region of Quel, where his family had a long history and where he believed the highest quality of wines from Rioja were produced.

The current generation is proud of the fact that the family has always maintained its vineyard land with as little intervention as possible fruit will be available for generations to come. They recently decided to pursue European Union certification of some of these vineyards as organic, and their first organically grown wine is now available. The Ontañón Ecológico is made of 100% Tempranillo, a grape that is of the utmost importance to the heritage of the family and the region. Ecológico spends five months in barrel before release and reflects all of the best elements of the Ontañón vineyards as well as winemaking style. It is the truest expression of Rioja that can be created with an organic stamp of certification.”

5 months in American & French oak barrels & 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Bright cherry and raspberry fruit flavors combine with a subtle element of sweet spice.

Ecológico has a well structured mouthfeel and fine-tuned acidity that give it a bit of aging potential, but we believe that it is the best if drunk young, on its own or with an assorted variety of cured meats, cheeses, roasted chicken, pork or vegetables.

The Control Board officially rated the 2011 Rioja vintage as “EXCELLENT” after a strict assessment process involving testing and tasting 3,987 representative samples of wine produced during this harvest. Average lab test results place this vintage among the top three since the current quality-control system was implemented in Rioja thirty years ago. The exceptional health of the grapes was one of the fundamental traits of the 2011 harvest, facilitating seamless fermentations as well as very promising and well-structured wines.
Technical Sheet
The Control Board gave the 2012 Rioja vintage an official designation of “VERY GOOD.” This global rating reflects the diverse nature of the vintage. The drought affected both grape volume and grape quality in some vineyards, but simultaneously resulted in a significant quantity of wine that was of very high quality, in line with wines of two previous vintages that were both rated “EXCELLENT.” After a growing cycle beset by drought, the late September rains had a significant and positive impact on ripening, improving the balance of the grapes and raising the final production figures for many Rioja vineyards. Most of the grapes harvested were in excellent condition with a great balance of alcohol and sugar levels. The wines are of superb quality, with good structure that will allow them to age for many years to come.
Technical Sheet
The 2013 harvest was unlike any we have seen in many decades. The overall weather was mild, but there was more rain than we have experienced in years, which delayed the ripening process. The vines blossomed in the middle of June, nearly three weeks later than usual. After this unusual spring, we moved into a wet summer and then finished off with optimal conditions for harvest. We began picking the grapes on September 24 and ended on October 28, 2013. Thanks to the great conditions at the time of the harvest, fermentation occurred naturally. The red wines are fruity, with deep color and good structure, which are signs that this vintage will age well.
